Atlanta Sports

A large and international city, Atlanta is home to many different sports and leagues that draw in the crowds every year. There is the Atlanta Falcons football team, the Atlanta Trashers hockey team and for those avid golf enthusiasts, a plethora of beautifully landscaped golf courses at which to try your hand.

Certainly, Atlanta is a city famed for many sports and many sports events, but perhaps none more so than Atlanta Braves baseball. Fans flock into the city to invade Turner Field every year for the professional league baseball games and even follow the team around the country to give their support. In the last 15 years, the Atlanta Braves have been one of the most successful Major League Baseball teams in the country, winning their own division title 14 times in a row. Although in total they have won the World Series a mere three times, twice while playing outside Atlanta, they remain one of the better teams in the league and always give their competitors a real run for their money.

Turner Field is renowned for hosting the Braves, and in the eyes of their fans, a better stadium to host such a popular team couldn’t be imagined. Fittingly located at 755 Hank Aaron Drive, Turner Field is a big open-air stadium that allows for thousands of fans to cheer in the sunshine for their team. Originally constructed as an 85,000 seat stadium for various events in the 1996 Summer Olympics, Turner Field was converted specifically for the Braves and named after its original owner, Ted Turner.

Another popular sports center in the city is the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Built at 1.54 miles, the track is a quad-oval, and the seating capacity is a huge 125,000. The track has been altered from its original pure oval shape and 1.5-mile length, due to construction that infringed on its space, however, now it is one of the fas test tracks in NASCAR. Atlanta has played host to many NASCAR events and, with the revamped Speedway, is sure to see many more in coming years.

The Forbes Arena is host to college basketball - another large draw for crowds. At the moment, the Arena is used for a variety of basketball events, including high school tournaments and playoffs, and all-star games. Morehouse College maintains the Arena and of course promotes its own college ball games at the venue.

Whatever your sport, Atlanta will satisfy your craving! Professional golf tournaments are held in and around the city; college basketball abounds, and although the Atlanta Thrashers aren’t the most highly rated hockey team you’ll still enjoy the professional games. Of course, the crowning glory of the sports world is found at Turner Field, home of the Braves. Even if you don’t start out a baseball fan you are sure to be converted by any prolonged stay in the city – it is inevitable that you will be swept up by the atmosphere and excitement surrounding not only division games, but also the World Series each season.
