Buckhead, Where Atlanta Comes to Shop and Play

Buckhead is known as a posh suburb of Atlanta, famed for its incredible shopping opportunities, lush estates and general affluence. Atlanta has encroached on this suburb until it is no longer a suburb, but a neighborhood within the city of Atlanta itself. While Buckhead maintains its own city government, the residents of both Buckhead and Atlanta treat it as part of the larger city.

Buckhead's roots lie deep in the past, when the city was started as a tavern and general store. Henry Irby, owner of the establishments hung a buck's head outside of his establishment, garnering the long lasting name. The name proved so ingrained that a petition to rename the area fell flat; Buckhead would remain as it was.

The area offers a lot of amenities for visitors and residents alike. According to one source, 40% of the area's shoppers come from over 100 miles away to browse the areas goods and services. Fine dining, amazing shopping and a thriving art scene make Buckhead a fantastic place to live, play and work. Buckhead lies at the northern limits of Atlanta and is home to many different activities to help visitors pass the time. From concerts to art shows, from a thriving nightlife to some of the best schools in the area, Buckhead has been a prime destination for Atlanta residents for a long time.

From the town's inception through the present, there has always been an air of nonconformity to the place. This makes the area especially appealing to artists, artisans, musicians and young people from around the state and the South. With its somewhat liberal atmosphere, Buckhead is a haven for freethinking people from all walks of life. You'll find artists brushing shoulders with some of Atlanta's wealthiest residents, businessmen conversing over coffee with musicians. The atmosphere and attitude of the place are incredibly conducive to enjoying life.

Buckhead is also home to the Lenox Square Mall, one of the finest shopping establishments in Atlanta. With other stores in Buckhead, Lenox helps make the 1,400 plus shopping establishments in the area. Literally, you could spend months going from store to store in the area and still not have seen them all. You can find local art galleries, stores dedicated to high fashion, music stores, shoe stores, memorabilia outlets and more. Buckhead is truly where Atlanta comes to shop.

With the thriving club scene, Buckhead is also where Atlanta comes to play. Establishments like Fado's, an Irish pub, exist alongside dance clubs like American Pie. You can find local breweries and fine eating establishments next to local diners and other eateries. Buckhead is a heaven for the food lover. With the never ending variety of excitement that Buckhead offers, it comes as no surprise that it is one of the premier destinations in the Atlanta area.
