Cabbagetown Neighborhood: Reinventing Atlanta

Cabbagetown might not sound like a place you'd like to visit, but don't let assumptions keep you away. This historic Atlanta neighborhood is located in downtown Atlanta, right in the middle of the thriving hub of business and commerce that the city is famed for. Cabbagetown, which grew up around a mill area, became a center for the arts, an area famed for the number of musicians and artists that call the area home. Cabbagetown has been revitalized, along with much of downtown Atlanta, by a resurgence of people that find living here a great opportunity. Cabbagetown is a small area, covering only six blocks, but it is one of Atlanta's most diverse neighborhoods, with musicians, artists, businesspeople, entrepreneurs and families all living side by side.

Historically, Cabbagetown grew up around a textile mill. It resembled many other mill towns, with narrow streets and shotgun houses. After the mill closed its doors in the late 1970's, the neighborhood became a bad area until interest returned to the downtown Atlanta area in the 90's. With the new interest came artists, hundreds of them, that found in Cabbagetown a place they could live, work and play. The influx of artists, including some famous ones, like Panorama Ray, brought other residents into the area and Cabbagetown has been transformed into a neighborhood of small shops and boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. The mill itself has been transformed into the largest residential loft community in the US, the Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts. A yearly festival in Cabbagetown, the Cabbagetown Reunion, is known to residents simply as "the vegetable" takes place every summer in the streets of this area. The Chomp and Stomp, a bluegrass and chili festival occurs every fall.

Today, Cabbagetown offers residents a place to call home in the midst of the commercial hub of Atlanta. With the proximity of all the city services, like MARTA, city schools and incredibly business opportunities, Cabbagetown is a fantastic place for people of all walks of life to make their homes. From growing families raising children, to entrepreneurs and business people, Cabbagetown is home to a wide array of humanity and reflects the diversity of Atlanta, itself. Cabbagetown appeals to many different people looking for a place with a singular identity. Cabbagetown offers unique living, whether in an historic home or in the incredible lofts that have been made of the original mill. Residents are as varied as an international city's inhabitants should be and reflect a tremendous number of cultures and traditions.

If you're looking for a place in Atlanta to call home, raise a family, or simply work, live and play, Cabbagetown offers all this and more. Residents of the eclectic area share a deep sense of community that is hard to find elsewhere.
