Druid Hills Neighborhood: History in Living

Druid Hills is one of the neighborhoods in Atlanta that is amazingly rich in history. The neighborhood is bounded on the west by the Fulton County line, Briarcliff Rd in the north, Emory Rd in the north and North Avenue in the south. The houses in Druid Hills are all privately owned residences and are not open to the public, something tourists find chafing. The amazing amount and variety of architectural design is truly staggering and many sightseers find that they simply can't get enough.

Druid Hills was developed by Joel Hurt and built by Frederick Olmstead during the late 1800's. The area was conceived by Hurt as the most perfect suburb area and would allow residents to live in beautifully crafted homes in many different styles. These homes can still be seen today and many are on the nations Registry of Historic Homes.

The neighborhood of Druid Hills has much to offer residents besides amazing homes. The civic community serving the neighborhood is extremely active and helps organize and host many different activities through the course of the year. Druid Hill's design is innovative even today. The roads follow the natural contours of the land, rather than making the land conform to the needs of the community. The main thoroughfare, Ponce De Leon Avenue allows for pleasure driving and commuting and has numerous green belts, or linear parks. Each park is completely unique in design, ranging from open grassy parks to thick woods and each offers residents a different aspect of nature to enjoy. From picnics to hiking, the parks are a huge part of the lives for Druid Hill's residents.

Druid Hills residents are part of the DeKalb county public school system, which is one of the best in the state of Georgia. There are numerous private schools and academies that residents can elect to send their children to and the area has a thriving Home School population, as well. With the many different education options, Druid Hills enjoys one of the best education levels in Atlanta.

If dining is your thing, then Druid Hills has much to offer. From seafood to southern cooking, you'll find a large number of restaurants serving the needs of Druid Hills residents. While there are no restaurants located in the neighborhood itself, there are many world class restaurants and local hangouts just miles from the area. 103 West, an acclaimed Atlanta area restaurant is just over 5 miles from Druid Hills, while the 3 Dollar Café is even less than that. The Agave Restaurant provides authentic Mexican food for those tired of what passes for Mexican cuisine in many parts of the nation and many other restaurants serve the residents of Atlanta and Druid Hills.
