Inman Park ’s designation as a ‘small town downtown’ doesn’t bother the residents in the least. It completely characterizes this small neighborhood that, not long ago, was slated to become a freeway. Inman Park is an example of many things; shining community planning, nerve and boldness in the face of adversity, how a few caring people can change a crime ridden inner city neighborhood into something truly beautiful. Inman Park is a fantastic place, filled with rambling old mansions that have been lovingly restored, small shops and parks, preschools and walking and biking trails. Through the care and love of a few individuals, Inman Park survived its brush with progress, avoiding annihilation and, once again, becoming a thriving community with a unique character.
The Way it Was
Inman Park was begun as Atlanta’s first planned subdivision. It was home to the city’s elite; they constructed mansions in the area, planted gardens, held parties and generally lived life. That changed with the turn of the 20 th century and Inman Park began a long spiral of decline which resulted in the area becoming nothing more than a neglected slum, ridden with drugs and crime. Much of the historic area had been damaged and few cared enough about the old neighborhood to notice. That changed when a single individual purchased a home in the area and began restoring it. That opened the way for other people of like minds. Soon, an army of new homeowners were renovating and remodeling the crumbling mansions. Now, once again, Inman Park stands full of life, love, friendship and laughter. Inman Park has gone from a slum to something that anyone would be proud to call ‘home’.
