Living in Jonesboro

Jonesboro is quite a famous city in Georgia, located in Clayton County; it is well known for its historical role in the Civil War. Originally spelled ‘Jonesborough’, this was the site of the final and decisive battle for Atlanta in 1864. The Battle of Jonesborough took place in September and it was due to the win here and subsequent Yankee occupation of the Confederate capital of Atlanta that finally caused the surrender of the latter the following year. In more recent years, the city has become associated with the 1977 movie Smokey and the Bandit since filming took place on location.

In the 2000 census there were just under 4000 people living in Jonesboro; the size of this neighborhood in relation to nearby Atlanta means that it is a tightly knit and virtually self-reliant community in many ways. There are a high proportion of minority groups in the area: African Americans account for more than 30 percent of the population while Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, Latinos and Hispanics make up another 14-15 percent of the Jonesboro residency. Most people living here are the average working age at 32, so this is a community largely supportive of families and workers.
