The neighborhood of Kirkwood began its life as a suburb of Atlanta, serviced by street cars and horse and buggy. For many years, Kirkwood maintained its identity as a separate entity, but in the early 20’s, the citizens voted in favor of being annexed into Atlanta as a neighborhood. This distinction makes Kirkwood one of the oldest areas in Atlanta, boasting some of the most magnificent homes in the city. In the 1900’s, Kirkwood went through several different changes. It went from being almost completely Caucasian in make up to being predominantly African American. In the 90’s, Kirkwood began to experience another insurgence of middle class families, but rather than a single race, many different ethnicities began to call Kirkwood home.
Kirkwood Today
Today, Kirkwood occupies a place as one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in Atlanta. One of the best things about living in Kirkwood, according to many residents is the close proximity to the center of Atlanta, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and an incredible diversity of different attractions like major league sporting events with the Falcons, the Hawks, the Braves and Thrashers, theme parks like Six Flags over Georgia, White Water and American Adventures. All these and more are a quick ride from Kirkwood, as are Georgia State University and Georgia Tech. Kirkwood, today, is a diverse neighborhood with many different aspects that make it up. The neighborhood enjoys many different local shops and restaurants and a feeling of community is beginning to spring up after the influx of so many new faces.
Unique Architecture
The area of Kirkwood is replete with houses in many different styles.
