The city of Marietta was legally recognized in 1834, but the settlement dates to at least a decade previous. By the time the city was legally recognized, a large settlement had already sprung up in this area. James Anderson laid out the original plat or city plans, long since destroyed, in 1833. Like most small towns of the time, the city had a square with a courthouse and jail. Marietta was reportedly named for the wife of Thomas Willis Cobb, the namesake of Cobb County, where Marietta is located.
The city grew rapidly during the next years, boosted by the influence of several new railroad lines, which ran through the area.
