Marietta, Gateway to Atlanta

The city of Marietta was legally recognized in 1834, but the settlement dates to at least a decade previous. By the time the city was legally recognized, a large settlement had already sprung up in this area. James Anderson laid out the original plat or city plans, long since destroyed, in 1833. Like most small towns of the time, the city had a square with a courthouse and jail. Marietta was reportedly named for the wife of Thomas Willis Cobb, the namesake of Cobb County, where Marietta is located.

The city grew rapidly during the next years, boosted by the influence of several new railroad lines, which ran through the area. Marietta's history is rich and varied, from early settlers to railroads to Civil War monuments, the city offers a broad array of historic activities that residents and visitors will find appealing.

Marietta's roots lie deep in the past, preceding the city of Atlanta and Chattanooga. While the city's past lies deep in American history, the city is dedicated to the future. Through an extensive parks system, the city of Marietta provides its residents with many opportunities to experience the beauty of nature. Some of the attractions near the city are Kennesaw Mountain National Park, sight of a famous Civil War battle and home to Civil War reenactments, hiking and other outdoor activities. During the spring, summer and fall festivals, picnics and arts and crafts shows.

Marietta is another gateway city centered around Atlanta. The city offers a quick, easy drive to all the excitement that Atlanta offers, as well as easy access to the North Georgia Mountains and small towns like Ellijay and others. During the fall, apple festivals, fall festivals and arts and crafts fairs dominate north Georgia, covering the hills and mountains with visitors, music, folk art and laughter.

Marietta's dedication to providing the city's residents with incredible opportunities and world class accommodations is the driving force behind the city's popularity with visitors. The city offers amazing shopping opportunities, fantastic educational opportunities and proximity to an amazing array of businesses, both local and national. Through city programs, entrepreneurs are encouraged to revitalize the downtown area, making this a home of artists, musicians, small businesses and family owned restaurants. The city offers residents an easy commute to business hubs like Atlanta, as well as access to smaller areas like Paulding County to the west.

Several main arteries run through the Marietta area, connecting the city to all points of the compass. I-75 and loop 285 are both very close to the city and allow visitors and residents to travel north and south, go around Atlanta or deep into the heart of the city. If you're looking for a great place to live, work and play, Marietta has a lot to recommend it.
