Stockbridge: A Small Town to Call Home

With a population of 22,000, Stockbridge is a city with a small town mentality. That mentality and attitude drive the family oriented city, sparking many annual community events and impromptu gatherings. Stockbridge has a long history in the area, dating back to the early 1800’s, but the city is inexorably looking forward. The city is located within easy driving distance of all of Atlanta’s occupational opportunities, as well as all of the city’s major entertainment venues, theme parks and other entertainment options. Stockbridge offers its residents a fun place to call home, set in a beautiful, natural setting and convenient to all of the world class attractions found within Atlanta.

Stockbridge is connected to the metro Atlanta area by I-75 and several other state highways, allowing residents and visitors tremendous access to all points within the state and abroad.

What’s in a Name?

The city of Stockbridge was reportedly named after a prominent professor sometime before the Civil War. This Professor Stockbridge was apparently much loved by the residents in the area and when the city petitioned for a post office to be placed in the area, voted the community to be named Stockbridge in honor of this man. Professor Stockbridge’s first name has never been known. In 1992, the city received a letter from a John Stockbridge in South Carolina. In the letter, he mentioned that he had grown up in Georgia and it had been common knowledge in his family that the city of Stockbridge had been named for his great-great-grandfather, Levi Stockbridge, a land owner who had done extensive travelling in the area. While no positive verification can be made, the city of Stockbridge feels as certain as possible that Levi Stockbridge is, indeed, the man for whom the city is named, ending a 146 year old mystery.

Famous Sons

Stockbridge is the home town to the alternative band, Collective Soul, as well as professional baseball pitcher, Kyle Davies. The city feels great pride in the accomplishments of these sons of the city.

Free Entertainment

Stockbridge is home to Ole Stockbridge Days, a festival that celebrates local food, music, flavor and fun. Each year, residents and visitors are able to visit within one of the city’s large parks and enjoy live music, browse countless booths hosting the creations of local artisans, eat fantastic authentic southern food and local cuisine and more. The event is free of admission for everyone who wants to attend and lasts for an entire day. All proceeds go to a charity designated by the local Masonic Lodge, who hosts and plans the event.
