The City of Stone Mountain

The City of Stone Mountain is the second oldest city in DeKalb County, chartered in 1839. The city gets its name from the nearby Stone Mountain, the largest single piece of exposed granite in the world. Stone Mountain is also home to Stone Mountain Park, a state park and theme park offering recreation, hiking, boating and entertainment like the Laser Show, which is held nightly at the park during warm weather. The mountain itself hosts the largest bas relief carving in the world, dedicated to Confederate leaders during the Civil War and is home to plant and animal life not found anywhere else in the world. The city of Stone Mountain has engaged in a massive revitalization plan to rebuild its downtown area and bring in new residents and businesses.

In the Shadow of the Rock

Stone Mountain Park is the largest attraction in the area, both in terms of size and popularity. The park’s enduring popularity as a tourist attraction provides the area with much economic benefit, a place for residents to play and a source of incredible natural beauty and inspiration. The park is one of the nation’s most heavily visited state parks, as well as one of the most beautiful places in the state of Georgia. Once, the area was dominated by a granite quarry, but with the advent of becoming a park, activity ceased and the economy became largely tourism based. With the revitalization of downtown Stone Mountain, called Stone Mountain Village, new residents and visitors are encouraged to look at the town through new eyes and see what it has to offer.

Welcoming Arms

The city’s revitalization plan is geared towards welcoming new residents and businesses with open arms. The downtown area, known as Stone Mountain Village, is being completely restored to its former glory with all new shops, restored buildings and fresh businesses. New residents are encouraged to take part in local festivals and events and the city goes to great lengths to promote a sense of community within its residents. Stone Mountain is rapidly becoming a prime destination for residents and businesses alike because of this welcoming attitude.

All New Downtown

The revitalized Stone Mountain Village which occupies the downtown area of Stone Mountain offers residents and visitors a host of dining and shopping opportunities. From local favorites like the Sycamore Grill to the shopping at the Stone Mountain Antique Mall and fine art galleries like Southern Artistry and Merrily Art Fair, you’ll find a ton of things to see, do and buy, all within the convenient downtown location.
